چکیده

This paper reports on ongoing research of various aspects of multi-modal interactions in a Virtual Reality environment in which visitors can interact in diverse ways with agents and objects in the environment. The virtual environment is a copy of a theatre and is inhabited by both embodied and non-embodied agents that can assist the visitor: providing information about the performances, selling tickets, or helping the visitor navigate through the building. Interactions in this environment are typically multimodal. Several agents are capable of natural language interactions with the user. However, because the interactions take place in a virtual reality environment, a lot of information can also be presented visually.

A Communicative Mediator in a Virtual Environment: Processing of Multimodal Input and Output

1 Abstract This paper presents work on multimodal communication with an anthropomorphic agent. It focuses on processing of multimodal input and output employing natural language and gestures in virtual environments. On the input side, we describe our approach to recognize and interpret co-verbal gestures used for pointing, object manipulation, and object description. On the output side, we pres...

Robust Multimodal Interaction in Challenging Environments

This paper briefly summarizes recent research documenting increased robustness that results from using multimodal interaction in environments that would challenge current graphical user interfaces, or even interfaces based on single natural communication modalities, such as speech or gesture. Multimodal interfaces that support the mutual disambiguation of modalities [1,2,3] can use one or more ...

Quality of Auditory-Tactile Virtual Environments

In our daily life, we mostly perceive an event by more than one sensory modality (e.g., vision, audition, touch). Therefore multimodal integration and interaction play an important role when we use objects in our environment, e.g. for object or event recognition. Burdea and Coiffet define the virtual environment as a simulation in which computer graphics is used to create a realistic looking in...
